Since 2013, Dr. Sekela Coles has served as Councilwoman for the 7th District of Upper Darby. As the only African American elected to the council, Coles is a testament to the possibilities of greatness and growth in the growing Upper Darby community
She said the strength of the Upper Darby community is seen in its immigrant community. She believes that communities are most powerful when they join together.
Coles said one example of this strength is the Upper Darby International Festival held in September every year. It celebrates the diversity of the township through economic development and entertainment. The festival also serves to strengthen communication streams within the district. The councilwoman aims to create stronger organization in the township so people from all different walks of life can have a seat at the table and an input in decision making for Upper Darby.
Dr. Coles said it is important that leadership reflects the demographics of the community, meaning change makers from all backgrounds have a hand in the efforts being made to improve the life of the community. She noted that Upper Darby is near Philadelphia and the major transportation system at 69th street makes it an accessible township. Whether you live in Delaware County or Upper Darby, you have easy access to the city.
One thing Dr. Coles hopes to see in the future is more people of color in positions of leadership. She hopes to inspire them. Learn more about her work via her FaceBook page under Councilwoman Sekela Coles.
