Born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. in Louisville, Kentucky, Muhammad Ali was one of the most influential boxing figures of the 20th century. On March 6, 1964: Cassius Clay officially changed his name to Muhammad Ali. A three-time World Heavyweight Champion, Ali won 56 times in his 21-year career. He was an advocate for social justice and involved in the Civil Rights Movement.

March 8, 1971: “The Fight of the Century” takes place between Ali and Joe Frazier in New York’s Madison Square Garden. This was Ali’s first defeat of his pro career. 

In 1974, Ali returned to the ring and defeated world champion George Foreman in “The Rumble in the Jungle” fight held in Kinshasa, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo). This was one of the most important fights in boxing history and cemented Ali’s status as “The Greatest” boxer ever.
