Few things in life feel as good as a really great orgasm, but putting your cash where it counts and helping support Black-owned businesses is right up there. In an industry dominated by mainstream Eurocentric standards of beauty, it’s great to see more Black entrepreneurs starting their own sexual wellness brands and selling products that are more representative. According to Business Wire, the global sexual wellness market size is expected to reach $125.1 billion by 2026. The main focus of sexual wellness products is to offer safer sex and improved sexual pleasure and these 8 Black-owned sexual wellness brands we’ve rounded up offer a wide variety of products and services to do just that.
Enby
Created to market gender-affirming products for all bodies, Enby is a Black and trans-owned retailer where you can shop for a variety of sex toys, including vibrators, strokers, plugs, and more. They focus especially on providing a safer, more comfortable sex toy shopping experience for the queer community, using carbon-neutral packaging for shipments. 2% of all proceeds are donated to a rotating list of small underfunded organizations focused on improving the lives of queer/trans people of color.
KinkCrate
Kink Crate is the number one monthly subscription box for Kink and BDSM that was started in 2016 by the husband-and-wife team of Karl and Cheyenne Williams. Each month you’ll receive five to nine items, and each will be tied together by a theme. There are all sorts of options depending on whether you’re single or in a couple, and you can adapt your box depending on the gender/genitals of your partner too. The brand also has a social media series, Kink Outside The Box, (KOTB) with Professor Sex. This is an educational series that focuses on a wide range of different topics related to Kink/BDSM, fetish, sexuality, gender, and sexual health. They discuss definitions, unpack what makes something sexy or exciting, discuss how to negotiate consent and pleasure, and provide practical skills education.
LyLyth
Founded in 2019, LyLythis a woman-owned online retailer offering a collection of lingerie, bondage accessories, and curated sex toys and wellness products to add a little spice to your sex life. “We are accepting of every person that makes a purchase no matter their size, race, gender, and sexuality” the brand explains on their website. “Explore your deepest desires and embrace the complexity of sexual pleasure with all we have to offer. You won’t be disappointed.”
Black Honey Toys
Black Honey Toys is the first UK-based sex shop and provides a carefully selected range of vibrators, dildos and other sex toys which reflect Black sexuality and skin tones. Their mission is to show that online sex toy shops should be more racially inclusive in their store displays and product range. They stock everything from dildos to anal toys and include a selection of lingerie and lubes. “Black people – both singles and couples of all sexual orientations, enjoy shopping for sex toys just as much as any other group but the retail experience often leaves people feeling less valued” says Mac Arthur, co-founder and CEO of Black Honey Toys in an interview. “Seeing yourself reflected in your retail experience can be empowering and uplifting; just as the scarcity of products which reflect you and your values can have the opposite effect.”
Bedroom Kandi
Founded by Real Housewives of Atlanta star and award-winning singer/songwriter, Kandi Burruss, Bedroom Kandi launched in 2011 with just five products and is now home to hundreds. Bedroom Kandi has a range of bullet vibrators, rabbits, and dildos, as well as lubricants and arousal balms and gels. In 2012, the home party side of the business hit the scene, with a mission to empower people, both sexually and financially. Since then, Bedroom Kandi Boutique Parties has grown, selling over 10,000 starter kits and working with consultants all across the country to spread education, empowerment, and self-love in their communities.
Organic Loven
Organic Loven seeks out the safest and most nourishing pleasurable intimate products for its customers. The boutique promises that their sex toys are safe to use without harmful ingredients and materials. In addition, all of the company’s lubricants, body washes and condoms are eco-friendly, so you can feel good about what you put inside your body. Taylor Sparks is the founder and she is an erotic educator. She has travelled the world presenting and selling on adults only cruises, adults only resorts, and conferences. Organic Loven also offers more than 100 books on relationships, BDSM, sexual health, sex positions and even meditative journals.
Kinky Choices
Adult film actors Gushy Goddess and Poppa Sweet Cheeks founded Kinky Choices in 2014 because of the lack of representation of Black people and people of colour in the kink scene. Kinky Choices has almost every type of sex toy, and if you’re into role play and dressing up, there’s a wide range of costumes and outfits to choose from. “We encourage sexual liberation, while exploring sexuality and enjoying sexual fulfillment,” the pair says on their website. “We have found in being pleasure consultants/intimacy advisers that not only are we educating adults on how to improve their relationships, we are also forming a stronger bond with each other.”
B Condoms
The lack of ownership and representation in an industry that directly impacts the health of millions of Black people led Jason Panda to become the founder and CEO of B Condoms, the only Black-owned condom brand in the United State. B Condoms offers premium-quality and vegan-friendly latex condoms designed for comfort and maximum pleasure. B Condoms strives to start conversations about health disparities in communities of color concerning HIV/AIDS and STIs. They also partner with non-profit organizations and donating condoms to help reduce STIs, unplanned pregnancy, and human trafficking in the Black community.
