Highmark Mann Center Anniversary Mural To Be Dedicated
Friday, July 31, 2026. Join Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Highmark Mann Center for the Performing Arts for a dedication of Echoes Beyond the Stage, 12 large-scale, vinyl art panels by artists Nile Livingston, Founder and Creative Director of Creative Repute, and De’von Downes. The mural honors the venue’s 50th anniversary.
Hear insights from the artists, community leaders, and partners on the collaborative design process and the Mann’s history. Then catch an orchestra performance by the Albert M. Greenfield All City Orchestra Summer Academy (ACOSA), a youth music ensemble training camp.
The artists worked with Highmark Mann staff and the community to create designs exploring how music extends beyond the stage and into daily life. The collection draws inspiration from West Philadelphia residents, the artists’ reflections, and historian Jack McCarthy’s archival history of the venue, A Century of Music Under the Stars. Each 10-foot panel celebrates the Mann’s history while weaving in images of its neighbors and stage artists, including Aretha Franklin’s final performance there.

Community Celebrates MLK’s ‘Freedom Now Fest’ Speech
Sunday, August 2, 2026. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s influence touched nearly every corner of the community. Literally, more than six decades later, Philly residents will come together to honor the anniversary of King’s street-corner speech for equality at 40th Street and Lancaster Avenue in Philadelphia. A defining era in Philadelphia’s civil rights history will be remembered at Freedom Now Fest. The rally was part of Dr. King’s national campaign in 1965 to challenge segregation and inequality in major northern cities, including Philadelphia. On August 3rd, Dr. King delivered his Freedom Now Rally speech to more than 10,000 on Lancaster Avenue.
The event will commemorate King’s legacy and his quest for economic justice and voting rights. Hosted by the Freedom Now Committee, the festival will look at the civil rights champion’s historic 1965 Freedom Now Rally speech while celebrating the resilience of the West Philly neighborhood. Enjoy a day of music, art, food, film, family activities, and community reflection. Check out a tribute ceremony, an art exhibition, and a film screening focusing on King’s visit 61 years ago. Enjoy live music, an arts-crafts kids zone, soul food, Caribbean cuisine, vegan dishes and other fare from the African diaspora.

A Journey To Liberation
Saturday, August 1 & Sunday, August 2, 2026. Go on a riveting musical and storytelling journey that chronicles the injustice of enslavement and the path to freedom on Juneteenth in 1865 in No Longer Bound, The Musical. Written and directed by Kofi Asante, the production looks at a trio of key documents: The Declaration of Independence, The Emancipation Proclamation, and General Order #3. The play debuted in Philadelphia in 2024. No Longer Bound Productions, Inc. is part of a Black-owned performing arts institution that promotes education, employment, and cultural preservation. The musical is an historical account of a race no longer bound to physical or psychological enslavement.

Bring Your Salsa Dance Sauce
Friday, August 7, 2006. If you want to put some spice in your summer, we have just the event. Free Camp For Kids
For too many families, quality summer programs are out of reach due to rising costs, transit access, limited seats, and safe spaces. The youth literacy nonprofit Mighty Writers in the Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey regions is helping to close the gap by offering free summer camp admission to 354 kids in Philadelphia, Camden, NJ, Atlantic City, NJ, and Kennett Square. Children learn to read and write proficiently and build confidence as they explore sports, STEM, and creative projects. Mighty Writers is conducting a 2026 summer camp donor campaign to support its efforts.

HBCU Swingman Classic Players Put On A Show
It was a chance to play on a big-league field of dreams and to hobnob with former major-league stars like Ken Griffey, Jr. and Jimmy Rollins. On Friday, July 10, the HBCU Swingman Classic featured Division I baseball players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. They shined on the diamond, showcasing their talents to the world in a televised game and celebrated the Black schools’ baseball traditions at Citizens Bank in Philadelphia, where the 96th Major League Baseball All-Star Game was played a few days later.
