    Description

Sim-sim, also known as sesame seeds, is a popular snack in Uganda made from toasted sesame seeds mixed with sugar and sometimes honey. This dish is significant as it represents the resourcefulness of Ugandan cuisine, utilizing local ingredients to create a nutritious and tasty treat.

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups sesame seeds
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1/4 cup water
    • 1/4 cup honey (optional)
    • Pinch of salt

    Instructions

    1. Begin by toasting the sesame seeds in a dry pan over medium heat. Stir frequently to prevent burning, until they are golden brown and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes.
    2. In a separate saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and a pinch of salt. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely.
    3. Once the sugar syrup reaches a light boil, reduce the heat and add the toasted sesame seeds. If using honey, add it at this stage.
    4. Stir the mixture well to ensure the sesame seeds are evenly coated with the syrup.
    5. Pour the mixture onto a greased baking sheet or a flat surface and spread it out evenly.
    6. Allow it to cool for a few minutes, then cut into squares or bars while still warm.
    7. Let the Sim-sim cool completely before serving.
