    Ingredients

    • 2 cups dried sorrel calyces
    • 6 cups water
    • 1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
    • 1-2 cups rum (optional)
    • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
    • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
    • 1 teaspoon allspice berries
    • 1-2 slices of lime or orange (for garnish)

    Instructions

    1. Rinse the dried sorrel calyces under cold water to remove any impurities.
    2. In a large pot, bring 6 cups of water to a boil.
    3. Once boiling, add the rinsed sorrel calyces, grated ginger, cloves, and allspice berries.
    4. Remove from heat and let the mixture steep for about 24 hours at room temperature.
    5. After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into a large bowl, discarding the solids.
    6. Stir in the sugar until dissolved, and add rum if desired.
    7. Chill the sorrel drink in the refrigerator before serving.
    8. Serve over ice, garnished with a slice of lime or orange.
