How Philly’s Black Community Can Enjoy Center City SIPS On A Budget

If you’re a Philly native or just happen to be in the City of Brotherly Love during summer, chances are you’ve caught wind of the excitement – SIPS is back for its 21st season, bringing you the best happy hour deals in town.

Beginning Wednesday, June 4, and continuing every Wednesday through August 27, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., dozens of bars and restaurants will take part in Philadelphia’s favorite happy hour tradition by offering exclusive discounts found only in Center City.

During the Center City District SIPS promotion, customers at dozens of participating businesses can enjoy $5 beer, $6 wine, $7 tequila cocktails, and half-priced appetizers.

From cocktail lounges to outdoor beer gardens, dance bars, and some of the best restaurants in Philadelphia, there’s a place for everyone at CCD SIPS.

For the Black community in Philly, SIPS isn’t just about discounted drinks. It’s an opportunity to connect, unwind, support local businesses, and experience the city’s vibrant social scene.

Philadelphia’s best happy hour program is back!” Center City District President and CEO Prema Katari Gupta said.

“SIPS is about so much more than discounted cocktails, it’s about rediscovering the spontaneous conversations and authentic moments that happen when we step away from our screens and into each other’s company.

“For 21 years, SIPS has transformed after-work hours into opportunities for meaningful connections that are even more important now. Nothing replaces the energy of colleagues and friends forging bonds that strengthen both personal and professional relationships,” she added.

SIPS draws big crowds, and many Center City bars and restaurants fill up. But while it sounds all glitz and glam, it’s not always easy on the wallet, especially if you’re on a tight budget.

So, how can Black professionals, creatives, and fun-seekers enjoy the SIPS experience without emptying their wallets?

Plan Like a Pro

SIPS is tempting. You might say it’s just $7 cocktails. That “just one more” can quickly escalate, especially when prices seem low, and before you know it, you have spent more than your budget. If you want to enjoy the vibe without overspending, have an idea of exactly where you’re going and what you’ll order before you even step inside.

Also, ensure you eat something before you leave the house so you’re not starving upon arrival. A full stomach often prevents impulse purchases and unnecessary spending.

Know Your Limit

Establish your spending cap beforehand and stick to it. When you know your limit, you can truly relax and enjoy the experience and not have to worry about the bill at the end of the night.

To stay on budget, consider the $5 beer and $6 wine options, or limit yourself to one $7 cocktail. This isn’t about being cheap; it’s about being smart and ensuring your fun doesn’t turn into financial stress later.

Also, consider using cash. This way, you can set a firm spending limit and stick to it.

Take Your Time, Sip Slowly

A pro tip for making the most of the experience without overdoing it is to pace yourself instead of refilling immediately. How can you achieve this? Order a signature cocktail and sip it slowly. By slowing down, you make that experience last longer. Not only that, it’s a smart move for your wallet.

Consider Mocktails

While the allure of discounted cocktails, wine, and beer is a major draw for Center City SIPS, a budget-friendly alternative is emerging: mocktails. This is another secret way to enjoy the scene and save a few dollars.

Many participating venues are beginning to recognize the growing trend of mindful drinking and the desire for sophisticated non-alcoholic options, and they are stepping up their game. They offer stylish non-alcoholic options, which usually come with a lower price tag than their boozy brethren. Opting for a mocktail allows you to immerse yourself fully in the lively atmosphere, socialize, and savor a delicious drink without compromising your wallet or your well-being.

Take Water Breaks

Alcohol can be dehydrating. Sipping water in between helps your body process alcohol more efficiently, minimizing its negative effects. Not only does switching alcoholic drinks with water save you money, but it also keeps you agile and ready to hit the dance floor or for other post-SIPS engagements long after happy hour officially ends.

Choose Locations with the Best Deals

Some SIPS venues offer better discounts than others. So, before you dive in, do your homework. Look out for Black-owned establishments participating in SIPS with good deals, as this will save you money. Not only will your wallet thank you, but your patronage will directly contribute to the economic vitality of the Black community. It’s a win-win as you get to unwind while knowing you’re investing in Black-owned businesses.

Dress on a Budget

Part of the SIPS experience is the fashion show. And Black folks? We like to show up and show out. It’s in our DNA to bring flair, creativity, and unapologetic style, whether it’s for a family reunion, a church service, or a lively happy hour.

The good thing about fashion is that you do not have to break the bank to look good. So, before you think about shopping for new clothes, consider doing these:

Dive into your wardrobe: You’d be surprised at what forgotten treasures you have! Mix and match pieces you already own. Sometimes, all it takes is a different pairing to give an old item a new look.

Thrift stores have got you covered: Philadelphia is a goldmine for thrifting and vintage shopping. You never know what unique or stunning vintage dress you’d find.

Skip the Uber Surge Pricing

The return of SIPS means Center City will be the place to be, but it also means ride prices go way up. Don’t let inflated ride fares cut into your happy hour budget. Instead, opt for budget-friendly alternatives such as:

  • Carpool pooling
  • Find street parking away from the event zone for lower rates.
  • Bike or walk

Network, Don’t Just “Chill”

Center City SIPS is more than just drinks and selfies. The best part about it is the connections you make. From artists to techies, educators to entrepreneurs, SIPS offers an opportunity to connect with other Black professionals across the city. You never know who you’ll meet who will open doors for you and your business.

The Black community deserves to experience SIPS without draining their bank accounts. This is achievable with the right strategy. As you step out this summer, sip responsibly, support the Black community, and show Center City how happy hour is done. Make those Wednesdays memorable, not regrettable for your bank account.
