The Caribbean twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago returns to the Winter Olympic stage in February after a 20-year hiatus.
Brian Lewis, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC), confirmed the nation’s participation via a virtual press conference on Wednesday, January 19th.
Lewis said, “The bobsled team has met all the qualification criteria for the Beijing Olympic Games. Our efforts required intense and dedicated commitment. The TTOC was very pleased, when communicated by the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation, to have signed off (confirmation participation) and in fact, we did not delay. Acknowledgment (of TT’s acceptance) by the international federation came very quickly,” reports Trinidad and Tobago Newsday.
The twin-island republic will be represented by a six-member team. It consists of four athletes and two officials. They are pilot Axel Brown, brakeman Andre Marcano, alternate Mikel Thomas, reserve Shakeel John, and officials Thomas Harris and Lewis Prentice. The athletes will perform in the two-man event.
Team T&T’s bobsled team debuted at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Norway and again qualified in 1998 for the games in Nagano, Japan. Their last appearance was in 2002 in Salt Lake City.
