Lagos, Nigeria – Hold onto your pawns, chess fans! Tunde Onakoya, the mastermind behind the inspiring “Chess in Slums” program, just attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon! Whether he emerged victorious against time (we’ll have to wait for the official results!), one thing’s for sure – Tunde’s dedication to using chess as a tool for empowerment is a true checkmate for social inequality.
For those unfamiliar with this incredible man, Tunde isn’t just a chess aficionado; he’s a champion for young minds. He witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by children in underprivileged communities and knew he had to make a move. In 2018, his brainchild, Chess in Slums, was born. This program uses the strategic world of chess to equip young people with valuable life skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and perseverance.
But Tunde doesn’t just teach the moves – he fosters a community. Chess in Slums provides a safe space for kids to learn, play, and dream big. Imagine the transformation – a dusty street corner transformed into a vibrant chessboard battlefield, a place where laughter mingles with the clinking of pieces. It’s no wonder Tunde’s program has garnered national recognition, potentially including awards and the incredible achievement of a student winning a national chess tournament.
Now, with his recent Guinness World Record attempt, Tunde has taken his mission to a global stage. Whether he conquers the clock or not, the message is clear – chess is more than just a game. It’s a powerful tool for education, empowerment, and even a little friendly competition (though hopefully not against your grandma!).
