Cosplaying has taken over now more than ever as people are expressing their creativity by dressing up as characters from their favorite anime, book, or film. Using popular platforms like Tik Tok, many makeup enthusiasts are showing off their skills and dressing up as iconic characters. Although this scene doesn’t have many Black cosplayers, more are joining in this Japanese trend especially Black women. We’ve rounded some of the most creative and talented Black female cosplayers that are making waves on social media.
Snitchery
Eleanor Barnes, who is better known as Snitchery is a real jewel in the world of cosplay. She has done numerous characters from Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Scooby Doo’s Daphne and plenty of anime characters. She’s also come with artistic makeup of her own. She has a Youtube channel where she not only shares her love of makeup but also talks about lifestyle and pop culture content.
Madara’s Daughter
Nigerian cosplayer who lives in the U.K, Whitney Anne a.k.a Madara’s Daughter may have not been doing cosplay for long but certainly does it really well. Her interest in cosplay peaked back in 2011 when she went to an MCM anime convention. “Cosplaying is a form of expression and women who cosplay do it as a form of art. To say we cosplay for attention really belittles the hard work we put into our content,” she said in an interview with MEFEATER.
Mimi The Nerd
Mimi The Nerd describes herself as “ an alien with a passion for fashion, makeup, cosplay and anime.” She’s a writer with a real talent for makeup. Although she’s fairly new to showing off her cosplay skill on social media, this self-taught makeup artist has a real knack for getting the characters she does spot on. From anime characters like Yumeko Jabami of Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler to creating her own unique characters, she’s a talent to watch in the cosplay world.
Princess Mentality Cosplay
Chaka Cumberbatch is an inspiration for many cosplayers and has been a cosplay for 10 years. She’s done a variety of anime characters as well as Marvel characters such as Captain America and X-Men’s Storm. She created the #28daysofblackcosplay hashtag which has inspired black cosplayers to take pride in their work. The Arkansas native is the Social Marketing Manager at Pokémon.
Slim Girl Supreme
22 year-old Zimbabwean content creator Chelsea Kate who is known as Slim Girl Supreme The incredibly talented artist has started a challenge for Halloween in 2020 and did a number of characters from Harry Potter’s Voldemort to the Night King from Game of Thrones. Her cosplay is different to others as she paints her body with body makeup and will rarely wear an actual costume yet it looks very realistic. Slim Girl Supreme is a self-taught makeup artist and has actually made her own prosthetics for her makeup looks.
