The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides critical financial assistance to cover energy costs for heating or cooling and is a federal program designed to assist low-income households. The program helps ensure families do not go without heating in the winter or cooling in the summer due to financial hardship.

Depending on your state, LIHEAP may cover heating, cooling, or weatherization services to improve your home’s energy efficiency. LIHEAP provides a one-time cash grant sent directly to your utility company or fuel provider as a credit to your account/bill. These grants range from $300 to $1,000, depending on household size, income, and fuel type. You do not have to repay the grant. Households facing immediate heat loss can also qualify for crisis grants.

HOW LIHEAP BENEFITS WORK

LIHEAP benefits vary by state, but typically, once you are approved, the funds go directly to your utility provider. You will not receive a direct refund, but you will see credits on your energy account. The processing time for benefits can vary based on your state, the volume of applications, and processing times.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR APPLICATION STATUS

Check Online

Many states offer online portals where you can check the status of your LIHEAP application. You will need your application number, Social Security number, or other identification details. For example, Pennsylvania residents can use the COMPASS system to track their applications. Follow these steps:

  • Visit your state’s LIHEAP website.
  • Navigate to the “Check Application Status” section.
  • Enter your personal information (application number or Social Security number).
  • View your application status.

CALL YOUR STATE’S LIHEAP OFFICE

If you cannot check online or prefer to speak with someone, call your state’s LIHEAP office. Contact information is usually available on the state LIHEAP website or in your local phone directory. Be sure to have your application number or relevant details ready. Ask for an update on your application status and an estimated timeline if it is still pending.

WHEN NEEDED EMAIL THE LIHEAP OFFICE

If you are unable to reach someone by phone, try emailing and include your application number, name, and other identifying details to help them locate your file quickly.
