Transforms Nigeria’s Pop Music

Timi Dakolo was introduced to the Nigerian Music industry in 2006 at the Idol West Africa Award. His rendition of the hit track, Time to Grow by Lemar, impressed the judges so much that he was immediately considered as a major contender among the performers. Throughout the competition, Timi held his position in the top three. Because of his ability to hold the audience and judges spellbound with his voice and performance, Dakolo successfully emerged winner of the Idol West Africa Show.
Born in Ghana to a Nigerian father and Ghanaian mother, Dakolo started his music career singing in church. He credits learning how to sing to his grandmother and aunt during his early years. As his confidence grew, he joined a singing group called “Purple Love.” As a founding member of the group, they sang in several clubs located in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. His gift for music earned him the top prize at a local talent hunt contest. The group split after all its members had gained admissions into various Universities.
Nominated during the Headies Award as a Hip Hop Revelation of the Year for 2010, some of his hit songs like Iyawo Mi, “There’s a Cry” and the most popular [recording] which he dedicated to his wife, with the title, “Medicine”, has earned him a place amongst the popular artists and a talent with so much promise.
In recognition of his talent and influence amongst the young Nigerians, the Federal Government of Nigeria appointed him alongside Mr. Eazi and Saadatu Aliyu as Anti-Tobacco Ambassadors. The appointment which was aimed at promoting the National Tobacco control campaign was also an avenue to leverage their influence amongst young Nigerians.
In a music industry plagued by scandals and marital issues, Timi Dakolo has remained above the fray. Happily married to his heartthrob since 2010 with three lovely children, they have become a reference point as one of the celebrity marriages that is standing the test of time.
