    Description

    Ingredients

    • 500g all-purpose flour
    • 10g baking powder
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 100g sugar

    • Oil for frying
    • 500ml water
    • 500g sugar (for syrup)
    • 1 tsp lemon juice
    • 1 tsp ground ginger

    Instructions

    1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cinnamon.
    2. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
    3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
    4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
    5. Cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.
    6. Roll out the dough to about 1 cm thick and cut into strips.
    7. Braid the strips together to form the koeksister shape.
    8. Heat oil in a deep pan to 180°C (350°F) and fry the koeksisters until golden brown.
    9. In a separate pot, combine water, sugar, lemon juice, and ginger to make the syrup. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes.
    10. Once fried, immediately dip the koeksisters in the syrup and let them soak for a few minutes before serving.
