Somalia Samosas
Description
Samosas are a popular snack in Somalia, characterized by their crispy exterior and savory filling. They hold cultural significance as a beloved street food and are often enjoyed during gatherings and celebrations.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup water (or as needed)
- 1 cup minced meat (beef or lamb)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Oil for deep frying
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the vegetable oil and rub it into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Gradually add water to form a smooth dough. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- In a pan, heat a little oil and sauté the onions until translucent. Add garlic, minced meat, cumin, coriander, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until the meat is browned and fully cooked. Let the filling cool.
- Divide the dough into small balls and roll each into thin circles. Cut each circle in half to form two semi-circles.
- Take one semi-circle, fold it into a cone shape, and seal the edge with a little water. Fill the cone with the meat mixture and seal the open edge by pressing it together. Repeat with remaining dough and filling.
- Heat oil in a deep pan for frying. Fry the samosas in batches until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels before serving.
