Description
Bissap is a refreshing hibiscus tea that is popular in Senegal and throughout West Africa. Made from dried hibiscus flowers, it is often sweetened and served chilled, making it a favorite beverage for hot days and social gatherings.
Ingredients
- 2 cups dried hibiscus flowers
- 8 cups water
- 1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 cup fresh mint leaves (optional)
- 1-2 cups pineapple juice (optional)
- Lemon slices for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the dried hibiscus flowers under cold water to remove any impurities.
- In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil.
- Once boiling, add the rinsed hibiscus flowers and reduce the heat. Let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let it steep for an additional 30 minutes.
- Strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into a large pitcher, discarding the solids.
- While the liquid is still warm, stir in the sugar until fully dissolved.
- If using, add fresh mint leaves and pineapple juice for added flavor.
- Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled.
- Serve over ice with lemon slices for garnish, if desired.
