This is not a hotel. This is a homecoming. Tucked into the tree-lined streets of University City — walking distance from Kilimandjaro, the Paul Robeson House, and the heartbeat of West Philadelphia — Akwaaba Philadelphia is a six-suite bed and breakfast in a meticulously restored Victorian manor. The property is owned by Monique Greenwood and Glenn Pogue, who also run Akwaaba Mansion in Brooklyn and The Mansion at Noble Lane in the Poconos and other properties across the country. This is Black hospitality done at a level that makes the Marriott look like a motel.

Every suite is named for a Philadelphia musical legend: the Neo Soul Suite (king bedroom, living room, dining nook), the Blue Note Room (indigo palette, decorative fireplace, kitchenette), the ‘Naturally Perfect’ Apartment (sleeps six). Every suite includes private bath, A/C, flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi, and robes. On-site parking ($15/day).
