Philadelphia, known for its rich Black culture, thriving small businesses, and deep-rooted community spirit, is witnessing a remarkable rise in businesses dedicated to sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

From sustainable fashion brands to zero-waste restaurants, many companies in Philly are implementing strategies such sourcing organic and sustainable materials, adopting eco-friendly packaging solutions and utilizing renewable energy sources to minimize their carbon footprint.

We have rounded up a list of some of the city’s most innovative businesses, some Black-owned, that are at the forefront of the eco-friendly movement. These brands are dedicated to painting the city green, proving that business success and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand. And guess what? They offer an array of products that will bring a smile to your face while also doing their part in saving our planet.

Grant BLVD

At Grant BLVD, it is all about sustainability and social consciousness. This Black- and women-owned business is committed to doing what’s good for people and what’s good for the planet. As a sustainable brand, the team uses upcycled garments and fashion, manufactured exclusively in Philadelphia, and creates employment opportunities and raises awareness for marginalized communities who may not otherwise receive a fair shot at employment.

At Grant Blvd, you will be sure to find a variety of garments, from menswear repurposed by company seamstresses to organic cotton tees with empowering phrases and slogans.

Modest Transitions

You can find naturally designed headbands, scarves, jackets, and other accessories at Modest Transitions. This Black-owned textile and fiber arts studio in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood is a place for sustainable creativity, community, and meditative making. Its founder, Melanie Hasan, sources ingredients from her pantry. She uses food scraps and forged plants in her naturally dyed designs and teaches workshops on sustainability and fiber arts. 

Happy Happy Cleaning

Happy Happy Cleaning is there for you, offering cleaning services for both residential and commercial properties. Its owner and CEO, Gary Downing, and his team of experienced cleaners provide efficient and reliable cleaning solutions to meet the needs of their clients. This green cleaning company makes its non-toxic cleaning products. The goal is to ensure a clean and comfortable environment for all customers using environmentally friendly cleaning products like vinegar and lemon water.

Gary Downing, who opened his Bala Cynwyd-based cleaning business to encourage others to use homemade, natural cleaning products to stay healthy and green, also teaches how to create your products and clean hard-to-reach areas through social media platforms such as TikTok and Facebook. 

Trunc

Located in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood, this Black-owned, woman-owned, and veteran-owned gift shop is your one-stop shop for unique items.

Trunc, which prioritizes materials that are natural, biodegradable, or recycled, offers curated products and artisan-made goods ranging from clothing to home goods. From handmade bracelets to lotions and soaps, all items are intentionally curated for their ethical and sustainable commitment to the environment. According to the brand, everything they sell is curated to encourage daily changes that support the planet and help regenerate your relationship with it.

Good Vibes Clean

This Black-owned brand makes it easy for you to find natural cleaning supplies for a less toxic home, and with scents like frankincense and myrrh, sandalwood, and nag champa, you don’t want to miss out. Good Vibes Clean offers non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning products that promote a healthier home and planet.

The founder, Ymani Efunyale, was inspired to start making her plant-based cleaners after she had a scare with her son who inhaled a product that claimed to be a natural cleaning spray, and this resulted in him having an asthma attack.

Good Vibes Clean’s plant-based formulas are free from harsh chemicals, making them safe for families, pets, and the environment. All their products are produced and bottled (in recycled packaging) in Philadelphia. 

Good Karma Café

This eco-friendly and sustainable coffee shop in Philadelphia offers a selection of fair-trade, ethically sourced organic coffees, and delicious food, including vegan options.
