Opening Note

Notting Hill Carnival turns 60 this weekend. What began in 1966 as a children’s street party organized by Rhaune Laslett, building on Claudia Jones’s earlier indoor gatherings, has grown into Europe’s largest street festival and the world’s second-largest carnival. The Diamond Jubilee runs Panorama Saturday, J’ouvert and the Children’s Parade Sunday, and the main parade Monday, with London’s mayor adding £4.66 million for stewarding and technology this year. Two million people will fill the streets of West London for a celebration that began as an act of community repair after the race riots. Sixty years on, it is still doing exactly that.

Guyana Cultural Association of New York opens its Diamond Jubilee season. An Aug. 30 symposium at the Lefferts Historic House kicks off programming tied to Guyana’s 60th independence, leading into GuyFolkFest. (Caribbean Life).

Creator Spotlight: Dennis “Pumpa” Liburd

What are you telling now? He has just been handed the key to the U.S. Virgin Islands and a road bearing his name in St. Croix, where he grew up after moving from St. Kitts at age nine. Two decades of soca later, the honor lands as recognition for carrying the territory’s name across the region. His own words at the ceremony: “Music was birthed in me. I don’t know myself without music.”
