Join the African American Program for a free virtual screening of “BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez.”
Presented as part of the From Slavery to Freedom Film Series, “BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez” offers unprecedented access to the life, work and mesmerizing performances of renowned poet and activist Sonia Sanchez.
The film is a portrait of the artist, revealing Sanchez’s uncompromising life. Deemed “a lion in literature’s forest” by poet Maya Angelou, Sanchez is a winner of major literary honors, including the American Book Award in 1985 and the Harper Lee Award in 2004, among others. A significant figure in the 1960s Black Arts Movement, often considered the artistic arm of the Black Power Movement. She raised her voice in the name of Black culture, civil rights, women’s liberation, and world peace.
The film highlights how Sanchez used language as a tool for equality, blending political conviction with innovative poetic form. The film traces her evolution from being a young writer influenced by civil rights who climbed her way to a cultural leader whose work continues to shape contemporary Black literature and thought.
The 2025 From Slavery to Freedom Film Series features films that reflect expressions of freedom, rights, and revolution in the African Diaspora. From the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean, these films will bring to light discussion and revelation of the continual quest for humanity and equity.
