The Convergence — 51st Odunde Festival + 2026 World Cup Opening Day

On June 14, 2026, two things happen simultaneously in Philadelphia that have never happened simultaneously anywhere in the world. The Odunde Festival is the largest African American street festival in North America. Fifty-one years old in 2026, it draws 500,000 people to eight blocks of South Street: West African drummers, Nigerian and other African diaspora food vendors, Afrobeats DJs, Haitian artisans, Caribbean fruit stands, Yoruba ceremonial rituals.

‘Odunde’ means ‘Happy New Year’ in Yoruba — it is a celebration of African New Year, of Black life, and of the city that has been hosting this event since 1975.

This is the day you will tell your grandchildren about.
