Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1837, is recognized as the oldest historically Black university in the United States. Originally established as the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia, it was created to provide higher education opportunities for African Americans during a time when such access was extremely limited. Today the campus spans hundreds of acres in a rural setting about 25 miles west of Philadelphia, with a diverse student body including African American students and international students from Africa and the Caribbean.
