    Jamaica Jamaican Patties

    Description

Jamaican patties are flaky, pastry pockets filled with a variety of savory fillings, most commonly spiced beef, chicken, or vegetables. They are a beloved street food and snack in Jamaica, often enjoyed on the go or during festive occasions.

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
    • 1/4 cup cold water
    • 1 pound ground beef (or chicken)
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped
    • 1 teaspoon allspice
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
    • 1/2 cup beef broth (or chicken broth)
    • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

    Instructions

    1. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and turmeric. Add the chilled butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water until the dough comes together. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
    2. In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat. Add onion, garlic, thyme, allspice, black pepper, and salt. Cook until onions are soft. Stir in breadcrumbs and broth, then remove from heat and let cool.
    3. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
    4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles (about 5-6 inches in diameter).
    5. Place a spoonful of the meat filling on one half of each circle. Fold the other half over and seal the edges with a fork.
    6. Brush the tops with beaten egg.
    7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
