Description
Basbousa is a traditional Sudanese semolina cake that is sweetened with syrup and often garnished with almonds. It is a beloved dessert that reflects the rich culinary heritage of Sudan, often enjoyed during special occasions and gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 cup semolina
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 cup desiccated coconut (optional)
- Almonds for garnish
- 1 cup water (for syrup)
- 1 cup sugar (for syrup)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (for syrup)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the semolina, sugar, yogurt, melted butter, baking powder, and desiccated coconut (if using). Mix until well combined.
- Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and smooth the top.
- Using a knife, score the surface into diamond shapes and place an almond in the center of each piece.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the syrup by boiling the water and sugar together in a saucepan. Add the lemon juice and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Once the cake is baked, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it. Allow it to soak for at least 30 minutes before serving.
