Cuba Tres Leches
Description
Tres Leches is a traditional Cuban dessert made from a light sponge cake soaked in three types of milk: evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy cream. This indulgent treat is beloved for its rich flavor and moist texture, often enjoyed at celebrations and family gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 5 large eggs, separated
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup heavy cream (for topping)
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for topping)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks with 3/4 cup of sugar until pale and thick. Stir in the milk and vanilla.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the egg yolk mixture and mix until just combined.
- In another bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add the remaining sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
- Gently fold the egg whites into the batter until no white streaks remain.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- While the cake is baking, mix the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy cream in a bowl.
- Once the cake is done, let it cool for 10 minutes, then poke holes all over the top with a fork.
- Slowly pour the milk mixture over the cake, allowing it to soak in.
- Refrigerate the cake for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Before serving, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form. Spread over the top of the cake and serve chilled.
