Description
Ful Medames is a traditional Egyptian dish made from fava beans, often served as a hearty breakfast. It holds cultural significance as a staple food that reflects the simplicity and richness of Egyptian culinary heritage.
Ingredients
- 1 cup dried fava beans
- 4 cups water
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt to taste
- Juice of 1 lemon
- Chopped parsley for garnish
- Chopped tomatoes for garnish
- Chopped onions for garnish
- Chili pepper (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the dried fava beans under cold water and soak them overnight in plenty of water.
- Drain the beans and place them in a pot with 4 cups of fresh water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the beans are tender.
- Once cooked, drain the beans, reserving some of the cooking liquid.
- In a large bowl, mash the beans with a fork or potato masher, adding olive oil, minced garlic, ground cumin, and salt to taste.
- Gradually mix in some of the reserved cooking liquid until you reach your desired consistency.
- Stir in the lemon juice and adjust seasoning if necessary.
- Serve warm, garnished with chopped parsley, tomatoes, onions, and chili pepper if desired.
