Description
Boerewors is a traditional sausage originating from Southern Africa, particularly popular in Lesotho. It is made from a mixture of beef and pork, seasoned with a blend of spices, and is often grilled or braaied, symbolizing communal gatherings and celebrations.
Ingredients
- 1 kg beef, coarsely minced
- 500 g pork, coarsely minced
- 250 g pork fat, minced
- 15 g salt
- 5 g black pepper
- 5 g coriander seeds, ground
- 5 g nutmeg, ground
- 5 g cloves, ground
- 100 ml red wine vinegar
- 100 ml water
- natural sausage casings
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the minced beef, pork, and pork fat.
- Add the salt, black pepper, ground coriander, nutmeg, and cloves to the meat mixture.
- Pour in the red wine vinegar and water, mixing thoroughly until well combined.
- Rinse the natural sausage casings in cold water and soak them for about 30 minutes.
- Stuff the meat mixture into the casings, being careful not to overfill. Twist sausages into desired lengths and tie off the ends.
- Preheat a grill or braai to medium heat.
- Grill the boerewors for about 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally until cooked through and browned.
- Serve hot with traditional sides like pap or chakalaka.
