A Conversation With Honorable Christopher Chaplin: Jamaica's Honorary Consul In Philadelphia

Honorable Christopher Chaplin

FunTimes Magazine had the opportunity with Honorable Christopher Chaplin, Jamaica's Honorary Consul in Philadelphia, to discuss his experiences and offer advice to those considering a move to the United States.

Question: What was it like when you came to the US for the first time?

Answer: I came to the US on a visit for the first time as a teenager in the late 1970s. It was exciting as my parents sent me alone to visit with family and friends in New York. I have great memories of hanging out in Brooklyn and then visiting family and friends in upstate New York. I still cherish those memories of my introduction to the United States and of the family and friends that I stayed with.

Question: What is your advice to a person arriving in the US today?

Answer: My advice is to view your arrival in the United States as an opportunity to build a future for you, your children, and your children's children. With education and/or hard work, you will accomplish so much. There will be challenges but you will overcome challenges with vision, work, and faith.
