African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP)

The first museum built by a major American city specifically to preserve and interpret the African American experience. Founded in 1976, the nation’s bicentennial year, AAMP sits three blocks from Independence Hall, deliberately positioned in the conversation about who America’s story belongs to.

The 2026 feature exhibition, ‘Borrowed Time,’ examines Black life in America at a moment of reckoning. The permanent collection spans four centuries of African American cultural production in Philadelphia and beyond.
