Crypto Craze, Stablecoin Gains Momentum

NEW YORK— During the 2024 elections, the crypto industry poured millions into campaign coffers to influence lawmakers—and it’s already paying off. With crypto-friendly legislators gaining traction in Congress, stablecoins have become the first item on the crypto regulation agenda.

Stablecoins are digital assets pegged to traditional currencies like the U.S. dollar. They allow users to send money globally, cheaply, and with minimal volatility. The stablecoin market has ballooned to $235 billion, up from $152 billion a year ago. Now, the legislative spotlight is firmly on this booming space. In March, the current president said he hoped to sign stablecoin legislation by August. Both the House and Senate have responded, advancing the STABLE and GENIUS Acts, which outline regulatory guidelines and reserve requirements for issuers.

Their appeal cuts across party lines. Democrats like Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York frame stablecoins as financial inclusion tools. They argue that stablecoins offer low-income and immigrant communities cheaper remittance options and alternatives to predatory financial services. “A tokenized dollar moving at blockchain speed could transform the payment system for the poorest Americans,” Torres told TIME.

So, what are stablecoins—and why is everyone, from Wall Street to Washington, suddenly paying attention? At a basic level, stablecoins function like digital bank deposits. A user gives a dollar to an issuing company, which then mints a tokenized version on the blockchain. That digital token can be sent globally in seconds.

Currently, the stablecoin space is dominated by USDT (Tether) and USDC (Circle), though Tether faces ongoing scrutiny for alleged misrepresentation of reserves. Despite the political tension, momentum is building. If passed, the STABLE and GENIUS Acts could allow companies like Bank of America, PayPal, and Stripe to create their coins, redefining who controls the future of money.

To successfully navigate the cryptocurrency market, you can follow three key steps:

  1. Educate yourself: Learn about blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and trading strategies.
  2. Choose a reliable exchange: Select a trustworthy exchange like Coinbase, Binance, or Kraken. Download on the iOS or Android store.
  3. Develop a trading strategy: Define your risk tolerance, investment goals, and market analysis approach.

For consumers and investors, stablecoins represent both opportunity and risk. Look for coins backed by transparent reserves and audited regularly. Avoid algorithmic stablecoins—like UST, which crashed in 2022—unless you’re ready for high-stakes volatility. Also, as Big Tech seeks entry, keep an eye on privacy policies. With regulation looming, this new wave of digital dollars is at the forefront of financial innovation.
