Ali and Helen Salahuddin saw the need to provide an avenue to educate young African Americans and Latinos in 1996, so they founded the African Genesis Institute. Their mission is “to teach African American and Latino youth, ages 7-14, their correct history concerning their ancestry and ancestral homes.” It is also designed to build “the self-esteem of the students, improve their academic and financial literacy, promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage entrepreneurship.”

The Internet is now the 21st Century vehicle for learning reducing the need to physically go to a classroom. In the previous career of this writer, my employer was the Learning Department for the U.S. Division of Deloitte Touche Tomatsu. In 2004, we had 16,000 users connected to the system. Deloitte used the e-learning platform to “on-board” new employees and disseminate information that could benefit their clients and enhance the brand. We had the pleasure of rolling out the system to Deloitte worldwide with 135,000 employees.
As I look into the future, I see many jobs that require computer expertise and I see many future adults who do not have those skills. As alumni of the Philadelphia public school system, I am sad to say that cyber charter schools beat brick and mortar public school by a wide margin. My 9 year old daughter has been in cyber charter schools 5 out of the last 6 years since kindergarten. A cyber charter programs offers its students FREE computers (laptops even!), FREE internet access (saving families $40.00 a month) and FREE learning tools to prepare their students for the 21st century.
