Cira Toure is a dedicated case manager and health navigator at the African Family Health Organization (AFAHO), based in Southwest Philadelphia. It’s a role that she has held since August 2022. Her work focuses on assisting African and Caribbean immigrants, both documented and undocumented, in the Greater Philadelphia area. She helps them in accessing essential services such as healthcare, social support, and education. As an African immigrant, Cira brings a deep understanding and personal commitment to her work shaped by her journey and multicultural background.
Background and Role
Cira’s road to the United States began in 2018. She holds a bachelor’s degree in logistics and transportation and is currently completing her studies in mathematics, with plans to pursue a degree in data analytics. Her linguistic abilities are remarkable; she speaks eight languages, including English — French, English, Fulani, Soninke, Arabic, Wolof, Bambara, and Mandan. These skills enable her to communicate effectively with the diverse communities AFAHO serves.
At AFAHO, Cira works tirelessly to bridge the gap between immigrants and the pressing services that they need. She assists newcomers in navigating complex systems, finding housing, securing financial assistance, and accessing legal support. Her efforts are crucial in addressing the myriad of challenges faced by immigrants, who often face language barriers, lack of documentation, and financial instability.
Challenges Faced by Immigrants
Immigrants arriving in the United States, particularly those from African and Caribbean nations, encounter significant obstacles. Many arrive without documentation, making it difficult to find stable employment or housing. Language barriers further complicate their ability to access services and integrate into the community. Financial challenges are pervasive, with many immigrants struggling to obtain basic needs such as food, clothing, and hygiene products.
Cira tackles the plight of immigrants living on the streets, often spending their days searching for work. The lack of legal status exacerbates their vulnerabilities, leaving them without access to essential services and protections. This situation is further compounded by limited access to healthcare and legal representation, making it difficult for immigrants to secure their rights and improve their circumstances.
AFAHO’s Impact
AFAHO plays a pivotal role in supporting immigrant communities in Greater Philadelphia. The organization provides rental assistance helping many immigrants avoid homelessness. Grants and donations enable AFAHO to offer financial support for basic needs like food, clothing, and hygiene products. Additionally, the organization provides transportation assistance, which is vital for immigrants to travel for work or to secure an education or healthcare.
Cira notes that AFAHO also has been instrumental in securing grants to support their programs. However, the need far exceeds available resources, and many immigrants remain without adequate support. The organization continues to advocate for more comprehensive assistance from city, state, and federal governments.
Call for Greater Support
Cira emphasizes the urgent need for increased support for immigrant communities. She calls on government entities to provide financial, educational, and healthcare assistance to immigrants, underscoring the critical role of pro bono legal services in helping immigrants navigate their legal challenges. Cira also points out the importance of extended shelter provisions, noting that existing shelters often provide only temporary relief.
To create meaningful change, Cira advocates for policies that would allow undocumented immigrants to work legally. This allows them to support themselves and their families. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or other legal mechanisms could ultimately clear a pathway for immigrants to achieve stability and contribute to their communities.
