By Careda Matthews of Yo Mamas Kitchen
Careda Matthews is an entrepreneur who has turned her passion for food and fashion into lucrative businesses. For the last 22 years she has worked inside the Reading Terminal Market cooking while for 10 years, she has operated accessories traveling saleswoman business for both men and women. Using Facebook and Instagram to stay connected with her clientele, she would post her pop-up shop location. Hailing from Kingston Jamaica, her “side gig ” came through the need to supplement her income. Raising three children as a single parent on a chef salary was tight. Her second love was always fashion so she took the risk and invested two paychecks to get some inventory. As the businesses have grown, she has paid it forward by sponsoring the Miss Jamaica Teen competitors with their accessories and organized food drives for the homeless. The time has come to step into a new phase, kick this show into high gear. Matthews will open the doors to her own restaurant inside the Reading Terminal Market downtown Philadelphia this month. She will be the first Caribbean woman to open a food establishment at the terminal featuring a Caribbean fusion menu.
